How I find time to write blogs and for my hobbies

The myth about having more than 24 hours a day is revealed. Here in this blog, I will answer the most asked question, “how do you find time to do this?”

I am a Software Engineer by profession and a writer by passion. And I work with new technologies in my work and it requires a lot of learnings, and failures, but in the end making it a success is what matters right. But even in my busy days, I usually find time for my hobbies. The so-called “Life” is short, the best thing that you can do to your life is to find time to do the things that you love.

Sofar I have written around 500 blogs on my blog. There will always be a usual question from my colleagues or my friends, “how do I find time to write?”. And my answer to this question is “we all have 24 hours, it is the priority what matters”. Usually, I go by bus to my office, which means that every day I have to wait for my bus and if I miss one bus then the waiting time is more. And it takes 20 minutes to reach my home that makes 40 minutes for the traveling, which is enough to start writing a blog, yes, I am not saying that this is enough to complete a blog.

Starting something is always a tough job, yes I understand for some people it is just the opposite, but I am the kind of person, that if I start anything, I really want to finish that as soon as possible. This is the living rule that I set for myself. I understand that not everyone uses public transport on a daily basis, but the point here is to find tiny timeslots that you can make it useful to do more, I am sure that you will be able to list down those. Now, take a minute and identify them.

I learn things in the day and write about them at night, so if there are any incomplete blogs, I try to complete it in the night. This gap will give you an interval to think of the missing points in your blog, or your brain will make you remember it, yes the human brain has this amazing capability. So when I am out of words to write or could not think about the right image to use, I take a break, it can be some hours or a day, it depends on the complexity of the topic I am writing about. Writing makes me confident about the things I learn.

When we write, we are actually giving an additional task to our brain to gather all the key points of the writing, and the brain will order them and keep it in memory. This is the greatest advantage of writing everything down. So, play your favorite music playlist and start writing today. You can easily find time if you really love what you do.

My other hobby is to create videos for my YouTube channels. So far I had uploaded more than 15 videos on that platform. As you all know that editing videos are a time-consuming task, only a video editor can understand that. There were times that I negotiate time for sleeping to complete the video editing, trust me, the output for that struggle is awesome.

I also love to take pictures when I go out. I am not a professional photographer, and I don’t want to become one. As I was saying this is just one of my hobbies. When I see some beautiful view, I can not walk without capturing that. So, you can imagine what are the things I carry with me all the time (DSLR, Action Camera, Tripods, etc..). Lol!.

Time and tide wait for none. We have been hearing this from our childhood. So make sure that you are utilizing that appropriately. With that, I am concluding this post, please feel free to follow me on any social media.

Here in this post, I am going to share a few questions and by answering them, you will be able to identify whether you love your job or not.

Starting with Monday

We all know that a week starts from Monday, and for many people, Monday is as boring as the truth. So my question to you here is, in the last 30 working days, have you ever felt happy or enthusiastic to go to the office? There is a reason why I have given 30 days in the question, I really want to know how much you love/hate your job. Now, if your answer is above 15, then you are doing perfect and you don’t need to read this article, though I wish you read till the end.

But what if your answer is, below 10 or even less than 5? Then you are not going in the right direction, you may need to fix that as soon as possible. Because, as long as you wait, you lost the best part of your life.

9 hours a day

Now we are in our office premises, and the average time we spent in the office daily is 9 hours. I agree that there are people who work more than 12 hours, some people spent less than 7 hours too. Let’s stick to 9 hours for now, in that 9 hours, how many hours you are feeling happy? Do your inner minds say that you are satisfied? If you can count at least 5 hours, then it is very good. But anything less than 4 hours is bad, and consider that you are wasting half of your life. You are trading yourself in a wrong way.

“I” less “We” more

You are in a company and you are not the only one who works for the company. You will be able to meet many employees just like you. They work, they spent time, they laugh etc. Are you happy with your colleagues? Are they treating you well? How about you, are you treating your colleagues well? We are human beings and we have different characters, but being professional in the professional world is as important as going for a job.

Are there any people in your team who are always bullying others? Are they criticizing you? I know friends do criticize their friend? It is ok if your best friend is doing that and he/she will never try to insult or hurt you because you know very well each other. If there are too many negative thoughts or behavior on your team I am sure that will have an impact on your life. If you are part of such a team, and you think that it crossed the boundaries already, just move out of the team. Go search for a team/work within the company or find a new one.

Remember, “We” is always stronger than “I”. Always give your helping hands to ones who need it.

Ends with a smile

It is tough to smile every day when you walk out from the office. And I know how hard it is, as each day we are going through in different circumstances. Here my advice to you is, try to smile each day when you leave office, and if you are able to do that wholeheartedly at least 3 times in 5 days, it is fine. But if it is less than 3, you are not living your life. And if you are not happy while you leave office, the sadness you carry with can impact your personal life too.

We all have some people who wait for us in our home, and they are the most valuable things ever happened to us, and nothing can compare them with. You need to make sure that the sadness you brought from office doesn’t have any impact on them.

Weekend

The weekend is the time where we spent the time on the things we love or passionate too. So if you can relate those weekend activities to your profession and you love to implement those in your work, then it is great. Here in this article, I am going to say about one thing which can boost your career to the next level. Trust me, this is going to work. I am Sibeesh Venu, I have been in the software development industry for the past 7 years now. We all are working in our day to day life, some people run their own company, some people work for other companies, some are not employed. The common thing that we can find in all these people is, they are passionate about their career. I am sure you are passionate about your career, aren’t you? Just being passionate about something will not give you what you deserve. There are some actions you must take from your end. Here in this post, we are going to discuss one key thing, which is nothing but Personal Branding.

Personal Branding

Yes, it is just a two word. But the impacts that two words can make is huge. There are many people out there, who think that branding is needed for some products or for some companies. I would strongly disagree with that. As a person, you must consider yourself as a CEO of you (Your personal brand). So as a CEO, you should definitely need some branding. Am I right?

Now you read that, you need a personal brand. How to achieve that? Here are some points which I think important.

Online search presence

How many times do you search for something in Google per day? How about an hour? A minute? There are billions of search queries happening in a minute in the world. What does that mean to you? We live in an online world, everything is online here.

So, if someone searches for you on the internet, and they were unable to find you, that means you are not alone in this online world. As a first step, just search your name in Google now. Were you able to find you? Did you get any of your images? Let me show you the result which I got when I search my name “Sibeesh Venu” in Google.

As you can see, there are links to my blog https://sibeeshpassion.com, my social media presence, my article links etc. If you find some result as this, when you search your name, wow you are doing great. Congratulations.

If not, please grab your domain with your name on it. For example https://sibeeshvenu.com and https://sibeeshpassion.com. This is very important, we all spent a lot of money on building a home in our real life. So, there is nothing wrong with spending a few thousands money in building your online home.

Impacts of social media

All the social media are very useful if you utilize it in a better way. You must create your identity at least in the following social media.

• LinkedIn
• Twitter
• Google plus
• Facebook

Remember, what you share in these social media defines you. So whenever you share something, please make sure that you are sharing the right content. Let’s say you had created your social media presence, and if you are not active there, it can give a negative impression to your followers or readers. If you are sure that you are not going to be active in these social media, please do not create an account there, so that we can avoid the negative impression.

And I will always recommend you to be active there and connect with the people, I am sure you will be able to find a lot of good people. There is a lot to learn. You should also create pages or accounts for your brand name. In my case, I had created a Facebook page https://facebook.com/SibeeshPassion/ for my brand name Sibeesh Passion.

Do what you are passionate about and share about them in internet

This is an important aspect. We all have 24 hours in a day. It is very important that we should prioritize things we need to do in a day, and most importantly you should find some time for yourself to do the things we are passionate about. If you ask me, I am passionate about learning and writing. I always do that no matter what happens. I give a top priority for that.

The biggest advantage of this is, there are other people in the world who may get your advice/work etc useful. So you are helping them in this online world. Helping others is an awesome thing to do right?

Work and your passion

If you are working in an environment or in an industry which you are passionate about, then it is the best thing to do, and it is amazing. You will learn a lot in your day to day life, you will not get bored. In that case, you can expertise things easily hence you can share the knowledge.

What if your passion and your work are entirely different? Yes, there are many people who live in that situation. The only advice I would like to give them is, please try to find out a job in the industry you are passionate about. You can be a star there. There is a great quote from Steve Jobs, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do”

The professional cycle

Here I am going to say about each cycle that I have gone through in my life.

Childhood

There is a place called Trichur, a district of the state of Kerala in India (which is also known as “God’s own country”). That is where I was born. My childhood was not that good, as we didn’t have enough money for living. My mom struggled a lot to make each day liveable. But we were happy together. In our childhood, we played so many things, games which are unknown to the new generation.

In the year 2007, I passed my HSC from GHSS. My favorite subjects were Computer Science and Chemistry, yeah there is a reason behind it. The teachers of those two subjects were amazing, we were good friends in fact. Those two years (2005 to 2007) were beautiful.

Coming back to life. I have two elder sisters, as we were belonging to a poor class family, my parents were not able to make us graduate. Eventually, that chance came to me as I was born a boy. Yeah, that’s true, in India we had this comparison of boys and girls in that decade. So it was I chosen as a warrior, warrior to solve all of our financial crises and other problem, a wall, which acts as a barrier to the problems.

I usually go to work during my vacation time. Here in India, we get 2 months of leave every year. So, I utilize these two months for going to work and earn a bit amount of money so that I can help my family. Most of the time the daily payment was about 100 -150 INR (That’s 2 or 3 $). The time of the work was 8.00 am – 6.00 pm. The feeling of getting hard-earned money each day was amazing.

I bought my first favorite branded Jean with the amount I earned in my 10th class (SSLC) vacation. And I bought my first mobile (Nokia 111oi) with my 12th class vacation salary.

Finally, I joined Engineering with my friend Ajay, he is the one who boosted me to select engineering. Trust me, I would have chosen some coolie work, where we get paid around 200 – 300 INR (Now it is 8$) daily. Thank you, Ajay, you have put the first light on my career.

Engineering College

I was a backbencher (second last, most of the time). I still don’t know why I was not studying enough there, in every exam somehow managed only to get a pass mark, not less, not more. Please be noted that this is my story, there were students who were scoring 100 out of 100.

I must say that, apart from teaching, the college was fantastic, we had full freedom. What are all the things you will do when you get full freedom at that age? As a result, studies were postponed to just a day before the exam. I have got many friends there, we enjoyed ourselves a lot even if no one had money in our hands. How many of you wish to go back to your college life, where you don’t have as much money as you have now? I am sure, you still wish to go back. Again I must say thanks to all my friends to make those days wonderful. I wasn’t a dreamer in those days, I was not even having an aim, the only goal I set in mind was to get a job as soon as possible.

Finally, I got my engineering degree in the year 2011 (luckily with no arrears).

Internship at HCL CDC, a step towards a job

In a wink, four years passed. Finally, I was an Engineer (with no job). There was not even one campus recruitment in my college. How does it sound? After all, it doesn’t matter where your life takes you, what matters is how you are facing it.

What matters most is, how you see yourself.

Few days after I managed to get a job in a hotel as a receptionist, where the employees were forced to spend almost 15 hours a day. Even though it was not related to my degree, I continued to do that job, I hardly needed a job. The only thing I wanted was money, no matter how little it is.

Usually, the wok timing was 8.00 AM to 11 PM, in between we were allowed for a tea break and lunch break. Every night I was saying to my mind that this is not something that I need, but again in the morning I woke up and go to the hotel.  A few days later I decided to quit that job. I could do that job only for two months. That was the moment I got such a huge amount of money in my hand (6200 Indian Rupees). My two months’ salary, felt really good.

I was almost running to catch my bus to go home, as it was hectic two months without seeing my parents. I bought an umbrella for myself before going home (a 3 fold one, that was the trend at that time), and I gave all the remaining money to my mom. Can you guess how would that moment be?

After a few days, back to coding, in my 12th class, I took Computer science, I must thank my computer science teacher Jisha here. She is the one who taught me coding. In my Engineering classes, coding was a rare thing. I joined a Dot Net course at HCL CDC Trichur, Kerala. We were a group of 5 people from college (Me, Ajay, Ansary, Murali, Aghil), who decided to join this course. And yeah, we were doing very well there, it was not the same as in college life, we become mature, we were paying attention to each class, we were doing demos. The best part is, we joined a mentorship program there and could teach a few students there while we were studying, my first mentoring program.

Yeah, I was continuing the internship program there in HCL CDC till my course ends (6 months). Thanks to all HCL CDC members for giving me that opportunity. I started my professional career there.

I got my first reward Certificate of excellence, my first professional award.

Moving to Chennai

Later in my career, I got a job in a small company as a software trainee. I still remember the day, how I went for the interview there, if I am right, I was ill with a high fever. But I had to make a move and attend the interview, so I and my friend Ansary boarded a local train to Chennai, Tamilnadu.

We passed the interview, and we joined that company, the salary was 5000 INR per month, living in Chennai with 5000 rupees was indeed a tough task. But luckily, we were able to sustain that. After a year, I got a salary increment of 12,000 rupees per month, which was a great relief. Finally, I was starting to have a relaxed life.

Joining in C# corner

In the year 2012, I came to know about the communities and how people are helping each other in our professional world. I joined C# corner, which was my first step toward community contribution. As you all know starting things are pretty much easy, continuing is not. There was no participation’s from my end for another two years, I got buried in my office work.

In the year 2014, I logged in to C# corner again and started contributing to the community. There I received a warm welcome from all the C# corner family members. I really appreciate that. Many thanks to C# corner. And from 2014, I was on the monthly winner’s list of C# corner several times, and my articles were selected in Asp.Net as the article of the day page. These things really motivated me to contribute more.

In Jan 2015, I was awarded as C# corner MVP, my first C# Corner MVP award. I was really happy that I was given a chance to be a part of the C# Corner annual conference as a result. That was the place where I got to know about the Microsoft MVP program. I had set my goal of becoming a Microsoft MVP there.

In the year 2015, I started my own blog and joined DZone, where I have been awarded MVB (Most Valuable Blogger).

In Jan 2016, I was awarded C# Corner MVP for the second time. I was super excited to see my contributions were recognized. Thanks much to all of my readers. I kept contributing to communities like C# corner, Code Project, DZone, MSDN, Asp.Net, Stack Overflow, Tech-Net, etc.

2016, April 1st was the day that I can never forget in my life. There is a saying “Patience pays off”. It is true, I got rewarded for my patience and hard work. I would treat this as one of the great achievements in my life. Feeling proud to be a part of such a great community. I was supercharged to read a mail received in my mailbox, saying that I had been selected as Microsoft MVP. I was screaming like anything, for a few minutes I forgot that I was in the office.

Effect of being a Microsoft MVP

After my first Microsoft MVP award, the following days were fantastic, each day my inbox was filled with appreciation emails and congratulations from my colleagues and friends. Many thanks to my Employer Customer Analytics India, the motivations you have shown were much appreciable. My image was published on my company website. I felt proud when I saw that. That was cool, right?

As an MVP, I was given the chance to be a part of Product Group Interaction (PGI) events organized by Microsoft. I met a lot of wonderful techie professionals, I learned a lot from them. I was recognized in the crowd, which was really new to me. And I enjoyed it, still enjoying it. It is a great feeling when people ask you for some suggestions or help, I really improved myself when giving suggestions or help. You will learn in that way a lot.

Back to Kerala

Though I had worked with many companies in my life, the one which I liked working with until this moment was, CA(Customer Analytics), which is where I started my community activities. The management was very friendly and supportive of my activities. But I had to leave that company as I thought of moving to my hometown, so I joined Cognizant Technology Solutions and applied for a transfer to Cochin. And it took over a year of a time span to get the transfer, and finally, I am back in Kerala in the year 2017.

It all went well, and now I am in a position to solve all of my financial crisis and other problems. I am doing that for almost 7 years now. The best part is, I started living with my own family, my world. Life is smooth now, and I could say that I have gained the capacity to make it straight and smooth no matter what the barrier is. Thanks a lot to my parents, for making me who I am today.

Moving to Germany

In September 2018 I moved to Germany as I had got a wonderful opportunity to work with medialesson GmbH, Germany. Life has its own Artificial Intelligence or Magic to surprise you in many ways, trust me, it does to me, so it will do to you the same. All you need is the patience to wait for your turn, always remember that the construction of a palace takes more time than an ordinary building.

I have this hobby of capturing the places I visit and always try to see the place through my camera. I have to admit that, I am not a great photographer, but it is something I love to do. Joining LiveTiles and Move to Sligo, Ireland

It was one of the tough decisions in my career to move both from medialesson GmbH and Germany, and relocate to Sligo, Ireland. I joined LiveTiles as a Full Stack Developer Lead on March 8, 2021. I will be seeing Sligo through my camera and will be uploading the pictures here on the Facebook page.

Relieving from LiveTiles, Ireland

25/02/2022 was my last day at LiveTiles, was an incredible journey. I learned a lot from my time at LiveTiles. Below are some of the achievements.

2. Promoted as a Product Director from Full Stack Developer Lead
3. Received Get Shit Done award
4. Selected as best beard once (laugh)

Joining Microsoft – Dublin, Ireland

In April 2022, I joined Microsoft as a Software Engineer at the Dublin, Ireland location. It wasn’t easy to leave my previous employer, LiveTiles. I can’t wait to learn and explore more with Microsoft. I will keep you posted about my achievements.

Career advice

I’m neither an expert nor a guru, but still, I would like to point out some do’s and don’ts which is a drop I learned from an ocean.

Do’s

• Try to be a master in at least one technology you love. Talk, write an answer about that technology
  you love.
• Always get to know what is happening in the industry, try to be aware of the technologies released
  each month.
• Be passionate about the technologies.
• Always participate in all the local user groups (Facebook, Linked In, Google Plus…)
• Whenever you are given an opportunity to work or experience, never miss that chance. It can be in your office or in any crowd. Be confident and take that chance, it will do magic.
• Last but not least always love your family and take care of their needs. This will give you the strength to move on.
• Adjust your time/calendar for your career and family, work-life balance is very important. Isn’t it?

Don’ts

• Never run behind awards or titles, those will automatically come to you but it may take little time. There is a quote “Never worry about the delay of your success compared to others. Because construction of a palace takes more time than an ordinary building”.
• Never do anything disrespectful to others, There are three things you cannot recover in life, the moment after it’s missed, the word after it’s said and the moment after it’s wasted.
• Be you, and maintain it. Never pilfer what others have done.
• We live in a society, and each people are different, so never criticize anyone, they have their own character like you do.
• And do not show off, I am not saying showing off is a bad thing. But if you do it every time, everywhere, then there are high chances, that people will judge your character in the wrong way. There is a saying ” The better you feel about yourself, the less you need to show off”
• Never miss the best of your life, FAMILY.

Introduction

In this post, we are going to see a few points which may need to consider while you write an article. I am neither an expert nor a guru. But still, I guess I have improved myself in writing articles for the past two years. I still remember my first article, there were so many mistakes. Remember one thing “Mistakes are the key to success”. Here I will point out a few things, which I used to follow while writing articles. Please feel free to add your own points to this article. I hope you will like this.

Last week one of my friends asked this question ‘How to write good articles?’. Here I am dedicating this article to him. I hope he will like this.

How to write a good article?

First of all let me ask you a question, what is a good article? As per my concern, a good article is the one which covers the needed points or solution about a problem/scenarios/technologies etc The important fact is when he/she read your article, they must be cleared what you had written, or else your article quality may fail. You are always welcomed to include some external links if you think that will cherish your article contents. Now we will list down the points. Most important thing is, you must search for an article with the same content as you have in your article, if you found any, you should start writing an article only if you have something more relevant to say more than those article. You can also explain how your article is differ from the other and why someone use yours. These points can also be included in the Introduction part which we are going to list down as our first point.

Point 1: Introduction

An Introduction is very important when you write an article, a good introduction can make your article viewer to read further. Trust me, it is very useful too. In this part, you can describe what exactly you are going to say/do in this article. It must be brief. And please never use any code blocks in your introduction part, it is never meant to be so. This is the part which lets your readers understand where/what exactly you are indent to do.

Point 2: Background

In this part, you can explain what made you to write this article. You can explain the problems you faced here, or when you get this problem. This should be brief too, here you can include source code too. Please do remember that this is just the background, so it is not advisable to include full source code and explain it here.

Point 3: What you are going to do?

Here you can explain the things which you are going to do in this article. You can list down the things for better readability. You can explain these points one by one. You can also add some code snippets too. But whenever you add any code, please try to explain even if it is basics. That will help some beginners to understand the things easily. You may feel that this basic explanation is not necessary as you have got so many experience and you may be good in it. But what about the beginners? I always believe they are the real beneficiaries of your articles. We must concentrate on both kind of users (Beginners/Experienced).

Point 4: How you are going to do?

This can be the continuation part of the point 3, or you can club each other. This is where you can explain the possible ways that you can fix your problem, Or the possible ways to achieve the same tasks. Any tasks can be achieved in different ways right? So when you write any article, you must think in all the perspective.

This will make your article rich in good contents. And this is where you must concentrate more on the coding part. When you write codes in your article, it must be formatted well. If you use WordPress as CMS(Content Management System) for your blog, you can go for any syntax highlighter plugins, or you can custom your own. If you post the article in any of the social communities, please use their formatting options.

If you have any images which explains the workflow or any tasks, it is always advisable to include those. An image is more understandable than reading the content, but always strict yourself to not include more than 10 images per article. When you include the images, please try to convert them to a particular size (Example: Width: 650 PX), this will make your article looks good. But no worries, if you have a low resolution image, and if you think enlarging that will cause any clarity issues, you can always use the same without conversion.

One thing you must remember is, you can always include what are all the things you have tried and what was the output you got from that. If you do so, your reader will get to know if he/she does that, they would get the same output. So it is not only about the the scenario which works fine but also the errors/problems.

Point 4: Always include output

An output is the outcome of what we tried right? So what if you didn’t include that? Isn’t it bad? You can include the output as an image or any content. It can be any result set too.

Point 5: Include the source code as a downloadable format

Please add source code as a downloadable format when ever it is possible. This will definitely help your reader, so that he/she doesn’t need to worry about the initial set up. We all are community guys, and we love helping each other. Am I right?

Point 6: Format the entire content

There are so many things you must concentrate when it comes to formatting. I am listing down a few of them here.

• Use the same font for the entire article
• Use bold for the headings
• Highlight the lines, if it is very important (Example: Notes)
• Use code formatter when you write codes
• Resize and align images properly
• Make sure that that headings starts with Capital letter (CamelCasing 🙂

Point 7: Give credits

This is very important. When ever you take some stuffs from any site, please try to give some credits to the content owner by providing the links/name. For example, if you are taking an image from any site, you can include the site name just below the image. Trust me, this will make you genuine. At last, it is all about genuine right?

Point 8: Write a conclusion

The conclusion is the last part of your article, you can summarize the things you have written here. And also if you want, you can always ask some questions to your readers. So that the bond between you and your readers will be in multi bind format (Yes, like we have in Angular JS. LOL). You can always ask for feedback, feedback is something that we all are looking for. Each and every feedback is valuable either it is negative or positive. If you get any negative feedback, be happy and try to improve on the things you are being suggested.

In a speech in South Africa in 1890 Mahatma Gandhi said this:

“A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption of our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider of our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to do so.”

Point 9: Keep a history of your article

This point is optional, but you can always include this too. This is where you can keep a history of your article. You can include the dates, the caption of each versions and something about future updates.

Point 10: Impact of communities

This point is completely depends on you. If you want you can always join some on-line technical communities like C# Corner, Asp.Net, CodeProject etc. I always recommend you to join in this communities, because that is where you can learn a lot and improve yourself to a great level. Most of the communities have some moderators who has so much experience in content moderating. They will moderate your article content and improve it in all the possible way. So whenever there is an edit done by a moderator, you can put a note on it and try not to do the same mistakes when you write next article. ‘Experience makes a man perfect’, isn’t it?

Another important fact about the communities is, you will get a good number of visitors and feedback, thus increase in growth.

Introduction

In this post we are going to discuss a few points which you must be taken care of, to be a successful software engineer. We all are software engineers, we do creates software, are we the only people who works for it? Absolutely NO. Am I right? There are few pretty good cycle or steps to be followed. Here we are not going to discuss about that. There is a saying, “When you do your duty well, no need to worry about the other things”. So let us see what are all the things we need to keep in mind to make our product/software to be successful, in that way we can also be a successful software engineer. I hope you will like this.

Last week, I attended India’s most awaited conference at Delhi. It is C# Corner annual conference. If you need to know about the conference more, please read it here. This conference will surprise you in all the way possible. I really got surprised when I get a chance to meet and attend sessions of wonderful gurus. Learned a lot. Here I am going to explain the key points which I have noted down from the session “How to be a successful software engineer” of Mr. https://www.facebook.com/glennblock. He really motivated all of the attendees like me. Mr. Glenn Block is a X Microsoft employee who has worked for Microsoft almost 10 years, He has been a part of Azure, WCF, .NET etc. Currently he is working as a Principal Product Manager at Splunk.

I am writing this Article with the permission form Mr. Glenn Block, I have asked for the permission after the conference. He was so kind and gave me the permission to do so.

Don’t be afraid to fail

We all are developers/programmers. We do mistakes, all the human do that. It does not matter that you create your software without any fault or fail. If you say so, you may need to make sure that your software is working or not. There is a saying.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF FAILURE- Albert Einstein

Don’t be afraid to fail, your failure is your best teacher you ever have. We can all do mistakes which will make us fail, but most important thing is, learn form your failure/mistakes. If you do that, your next try will be successful.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

We are all working in an environment where we all do mistakes and fail. You should never be afraid of asking help to others. This can reduce your work pressure and guess what? you can deliver your product on time. That’s what your Manager need from you. Sometimes, your junior can also lead you to the right path. So never be afraid to ask for help. Just let your ego flew away.

Be a continuous learner

We live in a life where something new is arising in each seconds. It is same for our IT industries too. Everyday there is something new to learn. At the end of the day, what you have learn is most important. You should give a try to all the technologies which is being developed related to your designation. At the same time, it is important that you must be a master for few of them.

You can’t learn it all

When you read the above points, there will be a thought in your mind. I know that. “How can I learn all?”. When I said to be a continuous learner, it is limited. You just need to give a try in the technologies which you think it may help in your programming life. At the same time, as I said in the above point, you must get mastered in few of them too.

Value your code

When I say “Value your code”, it is all related how you do your code exactly. When ever you do any code, just make sure that it does the things it is supposed to be in a clear and easy manner. It was glad hearing from my friend Mr.Dhananjay Kumar saying Mr.Glenn Block writes coding in a way a poet writes a poem. We must follows that. It is much important that your codes should be maintainable, or else the one who maintain your code after few days/months/years will have to struggle a lot.

Find a mentor, be a mentor

We all will have a teacher in life who gave us the knowledge, who help us to understand the things. Right? It is more important that you must find your mentor who narrate you to right direction. Learn from your mentor, because a mentor can teach you so many things which he/she got from his/her life. As we all know ‘Experience makes a man perfect’!. Once you learn, be a mentor for someone to whom you can share the knowledge you get from your mentor. While being a mentor, please make sure that you are directing your followers in a right direction.

Don’t be a jerk

There are quite a few around us. It is not required all of them to be good. Sometimes you may end up in a situation to work with people who speaks everything negative. What important is, you be an optimist.

Don’t over commit

We all will have deadlines in our projects, we all keep that. But there is a limit what you can do in a time frame. Try to understand that. When you accept the requirement sheet, try to understand the efforts need to be done and how must time you may need to work for the same. If it doesn’t matches the time frame given by your Manager/Client, please feel free to inform the same to your reporting person. It is very important that we give a product which works as they expects instead giving it with full of bugs. So never over commit, if you do that always, get ready to search for an another job. You may get fired.

Never say ‘Yes’ when you want to say ‘No’.

The right idea doesn’t have to be your idea

Do I really need to explain it? 🙂 We all work, we all have brain, we all have ideas. Sometimes your junior can teach you a lot, sometimes he will fix the problems more faster than you. Just admit it and agree the solutions given by them. Their idea will make the project delivery on time. That matters. So just let go your ego.

Be a good listener

Being a good listener, you can see the things in others perspective. You can understand the things which he/she understood in their way. This will enrich your capability and reputation. If they are wrong, you can say them that they are wrong and what is to be followed.

Testing, testing, testing

Testing is one of the important role in any software development cycle. Never release your product without proper testing, because testing is the phase you gets the bugs which our clients or managers never like. If you think you are done with testing, do it once more.

Patterns

Always follow the most relevant pattern which suits to your project. A pattern can make you fail at the end cycle, if you select it according to your requirement.

Be a part of the community

This is very important. You need to be a part of the communities because these are made for us. There are so many communities available, few of them are listed below.

In this way you can make yourself visible in online world. Share your knowledge to all, and gain knowledge from all sources possible.

Contribute to OSS (Open Sources)

If you get a chance to contribute to any Open Source Projects, never miss that chance, go ahead and do that. This will make your reputation much higher. Because open source projects is being used by billions of users.

Now a days, emails are playing vital roles in our life. We all used to send or reply at least one mail per day. Most of the mails are important too. Emails are not just some letters or contents. It describes your nature, your professionalism and so on.

I used to make some mistakes when I sent mails in the early stages. So I thought to share those with you, so you can eliminate those problems.

Things to remember

There are a few points, I am listing them below. Please note that I have listed these points I have experienced in my professional life. You may need to take care of other points as well.

Be sure you have selected the correct recipients.

You must be very serious when you select the recipients. If your mail is confidential, you need to send it to only the correct people, right? What happens if you add a third person in that? You may encounter some serious issue from your higher officials. In our world, you may want to quit your job. So please be sure you have selected only the necessary recipients.

Or

Select recipients once you draft the mail.

There is one thing I used to do. I selected the recipients only after I finished typing the entire mail. I select the people only after I drafted it.

Appropriate subject

The next important rule is to provide a correct subject. The subject says what the exact contents of the mail is. Please make sure that the subject is not a long sentence. Make it precise and small.

Example: Asking for permission, When you need to ask permission from your higher officials.

When reply a trail mail ( A mail which you are replying again and again) , be sure the subject has changed when you are discussing another topic.

When you follow or reply to a mail you got and if you follow the same thread you must take care of the subject. You need to provide a separate subject to each mail you send only if you are discussing or sending about another topic . Normally the subject will start with FWD :…

Address recipients

Addressing takes an important role. When you don’t address the recipients correctly, you may lose your recipients impression on you. So addressing is like a give and take of respect.

Meaningful and precise body content

When you set the preceding points in your mail, the next is the body. I know you know what you want to send, still make your body precise and meaningful. Avoid repeated sentences.

Avoid long sentences

Please avoid long sentences when you reply to mail. Make small sentences when needed. This will create a strong understanding of your mail. It is important that the recipients understand what you send, right?

Unique formatting for the content

I know we are all good in design but please don’t do any design work (styling) in your mail. Make it professional. Please use the same style for the entire content.

Avoid more line space

As the heading implies, please avoid excessive line spaces. When you provide more spaces between lines, it may look unreadable for the recipients. When a person spends time to read your mail, you need to be sure it is readable enough. Remember, time is the most precious thing in this world now.

Start with appreciation content

This is very important. When you reply to a mail, always start with appreciation.

For example, “Thanks for your reply”. This will make the recipients think that you value their responses. This will definitely make a good impression.

Avoid short forms

In our day to day life, we are all lazy. We won’t use full words when chatting with friends or family. Yeah it is fine when it is between friends. But things change when it comes to professional mails. You should not use any short forms.

For example: “U” instead of “You”.

Perfect conclusion

Finally for the conclusion, a perfect conclusion makes recipients feel happy that he has spent time wisely when reading your mail. It will make him/her to provide a reply to your mail.

For example: Include “Looking forward to hear from you” when you are expecting a reply.

Professional signature

The signature is very important. We may use our name alone in our signature, right? Yeah I was also doing the same mistake. But a signature should not be just a name. It must be a replica of your address. You can add your business website link also.

Always do a re-check before sending 

Once you have done everything, always re-check what you have typed so far. It will help you identify the small mistakes you have made.

Always turn on spell check

It is better to turn on the spell check always. As you know, spelling mistakes give another meaning to your content. In our professional life it is very important. It implies your character too. Use correct spelling; take your own time to follow that.

Be polite . We all are having issues in our professional life. But it is not necessary that your recipients must know about that.

Always remember that you are representing your company.  When you do a mistake , it reflect your company reputation.

For Example: On Friday you wanted to send an email about your work status to the client, and you are sure that you have already sent it on Friday itself. But what if you are getting a mail from your client saying that you have not send that mail on Monday? What will be your reply?

Let me guess 🙂  . Following will be your reply !.

I have already send you the mail on Friday itself.

Am I right?
But it is not the right way. The reply must be as follows.

Dear Sibeesh,
Thanks a lot for your mail. I will send the mail now. Please be noted that I actually sent the mail on Friday itself. Please do not hesitate to reply if you   still don’t get my mail. I will see what I can do with that.
