Microsoft Exchange Server database works with Extensible Storage Engine (ESE), which is also known as the JET engine at the core. This Jet engine utilizes mailbox database cache to decrease the input-output operation enumeration. It is the jet engine where all the transaction log files are stowed.

Exchange transaction log tracks the entire modifications that are done in the database. All the data that is to be updated in the user mailboxes are at first registered in the transaction log files then, written to the database. When the Exchange database operates normally, it is certainly not unusual for any database procedure to terminate unexpectedly. The main cause of this termination is losing the access to backend storage, corruption in the file system, or server-wide power loss. Exchange Server will start up smoothly only after a proper shut down of the Exchange database. For proper shut down of the database, the entire data in the transaction log should be committed to database files. When all the transaction log data becomes committed, the database is considered as “detached” and it is a green signal for a clean shut down. When the Exchange Server starts up, it inspects the state of the database and if it founds it “attached” with the log files, the database is considered to be in “Exchange Dirty Shutdown State”.

Hence, when any up-gradation or operation on the database becomes loaded into the cache memory but is not committed to Exchange database, it is rewarded as ‘Dirty’ by this Jet engine. The database is considered as inconsistent until all the Dirty transactions not become resolved. When the Exchange Server shuts down accidentally during the inconsistency of database, the Dirty Shutdown State is received.

Why the Exchange Database States Dirty Shutdown Error?

If the Exchange database is unable to mount, it shows the dirty shutdown state. Here are the possible reasons for this error:

• EDB/STM not detached properly from log files
• EDB file becomes inaccessible
• Transaction log files got damaged
• Log files got removed or deleted
• Miscellaneous or any other reasons

A Technique to fix Dirty Shutdown State Issue

If the Exchange database is unable to mount the way to recover it depends on the status quo. Before going to the solution, verify that your Exchange Server is working in a flow. After that, go with the down-mentioned guidelines:

Step 1: Determine the area of issue: Navigate to the folder of Exchange Server that comprises Exchange database and logs files. Usually, the folder is placed at below location:

C: >> Program files >> Microsoft >> Exchange Server >> v15 >> Mailbox >> Mailbox Database >> *.edb

Note: The location may vary if the user has been selected some other place to stock the log files.

Step 2: Terminate the Exchange services and quit the Exchange Server management console (ECP).

Step 3: After this, rename the folder of Mailbox database.

Step 4: Now, generate a new folder with the same name of the folder that you have renamed in the previous step.

Step 5: Now, begin the Exchange services again and launch the Exchange Server Management console.

Step 6: Hit a right click on the Database folder of Exchange Server management console and select mount. This will ask to generate a fresh, empty database. Click on Ok.

After this, the exchange will begin running process and users can access the entire mailboxes but all will be empty. After opening the folder, you will get the new and blank Exchange Server database within it.

Now, we can restore data from the old and corrupted database for the empty mailboxes.

Observational Verdict

The “Dirty Shutdown” issue is a fairly self-explanatory one, which implies that the database is down or in the unhealthy state. This error can cause anxiety for the Exchange Administrators who are spending so many hours during frantically to get a database mount and restore its functionality. For Exchange Server, troubleshooting the same issue we have come up with this editorial. Here, we have described an easy solution to resolve Exchange Server Dirty Shutdown State issue.

Steps to create custom signature in Outlook

You can always modify or create a new signature. Here I will create a new one. So shall we see the steps?.

Login to your Outlook and click on New Email. Now you will get a new Email page. Go to Signature tab and click Signatures.

Click the “New” button and type your signature name in the given text box. Then click on OK.

So you have created a normal signature. Now we will include some Images in our signature and we will add links to those. To include an image, click on the image icon on the right side.

The only thing pending is we need to add link to the image right? For that, select the image you just loaded, and click on the link button.

Here in this post we will learn how we can do that.

To move mails from Inbox to other folder, you need to follows the below steps.

Step 1

Right click on the mail on which sender you need to create the rule and go to Rules and then Create Rule.

Now click on the ‘Move the item to folder’ check box. You can see a pop as follows.

Please make sure that ‘Run this rule now on messages already in “Inbox”‘ and ‘Turn on this rule’ is checked so that this rules will be applied for your past mails which satisfied the conditions. This will make sure that the past mails will be moved to your new folder.

Once you are done, please click on the finish button. You can see a pop saying that the rule is running.

Now we need to follow the following steps.

Go to view tab from the menu and click on the Draft

You can see that in the above image.

If you do first step, your word document becomes as follows.

Now you need to paragraph menu from Home tab.

Step 3

Click on the icon from paragraph menu.

Once you click on that icon, you will get some non printing characters in your word document. Click on the last in your word document and press delete.

Now go back to your home tab and click on show/hide menu and then go to View tab and click print layout option.

Hi all, in this article you will learn about mail merging in Word 2013. Most of you may have already worked on this, or familiar with it. This article is for those who have not yet tried this.

Background

Yesterday one of my friends asked me about mail merging in Word. To be frank, that was the first time I had heard about it. I then learned it is a feature available in Word. But I could search and help my friend about that. So I thought of sharing that info with you all.

Mail Merging in Word

The Mail Merge feature helps you to create Word documents with nearly the same contents with only a few differences. Let us say you have to send your marriage invitation Word document to 100 people. In this case, only the address will be different, right? (I know you won’t create your marriage invitation in a Word document. This is just for an example.) So here we can use the mail merge feature.

How it works

We will have two Word documents. The first document will have the address details of the recipients. And the second document will have the marriage invitation content. So what we are going to do is, just gathering the data from the first document to the second. At last we will have a separate marriage invitation for the separate address.

Let’s start

We will do the entire process step by step.

Step 1

Open a sample Word document.

Consider that we have the first document, document 1, as in the following (please see the document1.docx from the download list).

NB: The most important thing here is, I have used a comma (,) as the delimiter. To work with this feature we must give a delimiter (separator) in each of the details.

Step 2

Create invitation Word document.

Consider we have the content (document2.docx) as follows.

Today I came across the requirement to determine the consolidated data in Excel. I was just calculating my monthly expenses for the past few months. So I thought of sharing how to consolidate the data in Excel, so that it will be more readable.

How

Let us say I have the data as follows.

You can see that some of the categories are repeating in that list. So we need to consolidate the items, right? So that I can get an overview of how much money I have spent in each category, so let us do that.

Step 1

Create the headers.

Step 2

Click on the adjacent cell below “Consolidated Category”, so that you can consolidate the data there.

Step 3

Go to Data and click on the tab Consolidate.

The moment you clicked, a pop-up will open as follows.

Step 4

Now click on the reference icon just near to the Browse button.

Once you click on the reference, please select the data that is not consolidated as follows.

Please note that a reference formula has been added to the reference box.

Step 5

Now click on the reference icon again as follows.

Step 6

Please click on the Add button so that your formula can be used the next time also. Once you have clicked on that, you can see that your formula has been added to all the references.

Step 7

Now an important part is, since our data is based on the category and the category is left column in the selection, you need to check the Left column.

Once you are done, please click OK.

This article provides some tricks we may use in our day-to-day programming life in SQL.

Background

Right now, I am handling a software product in my office. The back end used in that project is SQL Server 2008, that have more than 250 tables and consists around cores of data. :). So I used to spend a lot of time in the queries to do some backend fixes. So I thought to share those with you all.

Performance check hints in SQL

A. To check for a missing Index, duplicate Index and unused index in the live db and appropriately drop and create the index, when doing this, check the execution plan, the SQL cost based optimizer will provide information about the missing index.

B. Review whether the index is required based on the predicator that is used in the query and appropriately creates or drops.

C. Try to use join conditions instead of a sub query.

Try this in one place and check the execution plan. If an improvement is found, do the same thing everwhere else.

D. The problem in the query would be:

Too many connections are made using a sub-query and indexing issue.
E. Check whether the predicator column (Condition Column) is a clustered index, if not, see the feasibility for creating it.

F. If the where condition is based on multiple columns, analyze the multiple condition and create a non-clustered index for it, check the execution plan when doing it, there should not be any table scan, clustered scan, non-clustered scan.

G. In the execution plan, every predicator should be done using a seek operation.

Note: You can get the query from the internet for checking for a missing index, duplicate index and unused index.

For the past few days I have been working on ADOMD and MDX. I encountered a situation where I need to convert my Cell Set to a HTML table and render it to the client-side Grid. So I thought of sharing that with you all.

Why

As I have already said, in my current project we are using MDX cubes, so in the server-side we will get only a CellSet. So I have tried very much to convert the CellSet to the JSON for this JQX grid alone (all other Grids in the project use a HTML table as the data source). But I couldn’t find any good way for that. So I thought of getting the HTML table from the CellSet as in the other grid at the server side. And I knew how to formulate the Array and JSON from an HTML table. Here I am sharing that information.

Please provide your valuable suggestions for improvement.

Using the Code

We modify the code as per our needs from the preceding specified articles and bind to an HtmlTextWriter. We have created a function called renderHTML() that will accept CellSet as an argument. Here, I will show the code.

Finally, the function will return the output as an HTML table with the id “myhtmltab” where all the th, tr and td tags are rendered.

Now if you want, you can convert the HTML table to an Array, JSON in the client side.

Now what we need to do is just add the dynamic HTML to the DOM. You can do that as follows:

Convert Dynamic HTML to JSON Dynamically in jQuery

As we discussed above, here also we are looping through the column and rows. The intent behind this is to formulate a dynamic JSON to assign data to my JQX Grid (You can check this out: Working With JQX Grid With Filtering And Sorting).
