Introduction

Here, in this post we are going to a see how we can add Table of Contents to our WordPress posts and pages. Here we are going to install a plugin to do this work, why I have chosen this plugin is, it is so simple and yet do the work very well. It doesn’t have more settings and features but the way it is created is 100% apt for what it meant to be. You can also give it a try. I hope you will like this. Now let’s begin.

Background

Today I was just trying to create a post, at that time I decided to include the Table of Contents to the post, then I searched for plugins which does the work well. I found many in the Add New plugin page when I search for the keyword “Table of Contents”, but most of them has too many functinalities and configurations in it. Then I found this plugin F(X)-TOC. I liked it as it is very simple and doesn’t have much configurations.

Steps to add TOC to your post or page

Adding a TOC to your page or post with this plugin is so simple. You just need to add toc in square brackets to your post or pages when you need the table of contents to be displayed, then this plugin will take all the heading elements (h1-h6) and add those in to the table of contents. That’s pretty much simple right? Let’s see it in action now. As in the preceding image, I have set the table of contents and my heading elements.

Now if you run your page/post you can see the table of contents.

I always used to update my WordPress core and the plugins when ever there is an update. So I faced this issue “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance Check back in a minute” so many times. So thought of sharing you a quick for the same.

Step 1: Go to your file explorer

You can either go to your ftp folder via file explorer or using ftp clients like FileZilla.

Check for .maintenance file in the root folder and delete that.

Introduction

This part is for the people who have never tried or heard about WordPress yet (I know there won’t be many numbers). Basically WordPress is a web software which we can use to create websites, blogs, apps and many more. We can choose any themes which is available in the themes directory, or we can download and install the themes too. Worpress provides 100% customizing options, so that we can do everything what we want to do in our websites/blogs/apps. I have installed this plugin which does the commenting much easier and effective. This plugin is an old one, still it does for what it is made for. There are many other commenting plugins available, you can try those.

It is a great plugin that automatically optimize the images as you upload to your post. Sounds cool? The good thing is, it can optimize the images that you have already uploaded too in a timely manner.

There is no non English country visitors if you don’t have an option to translate your contents to other languages in your blog. So is is recommended to install a translator plugin. In that case you can use this plugin, since it is capable of translating your contents to 90 plus languages. It uses Google’s automatic translation service.

As the plugin author says you can increase your Email subscribers by over 500% by using this plugin. This is a very well needed plugin which helps you to collect the mail ids of the visitors of your site and collectively sends mails to them when you create new posts so that you you can increase the visitors rate of your site. This plugin makes email marketing much easier that we think. With this plugin you can place a stylish and responsive form in your site which will allow user to subscribe to your site. Once the user is subscribed, the emails will be sent to those users whenever you create a new post.

We all are fascinated about the statistics about our site. We are quite happy if the visitors count increases. Am I right? In this case, you may needed an option to track the visitors count of each posts. Here you can use this plugin which really works great.

Sometimes we may end up in a situation that there is no other way than migrating our site. In that situation this plugin will help you. I will say you what makes me to install this plugin. Previously my site was static, and later I moved to dynamic one as I used WordPress. Since I was using some static HTML pages with the extension of /html, for example http://sibeeshpassion.com/achievements.html, after migrating to WordPress the post URL was changed to http://sibeeshpassion.com/achievements, hence 404 error occurs. With this plugin we can redirect the pages which is not available now, to the actual pages after the migration.

As you all know search feature is an essential thing in every website or blog. This makes sure the visitors to get all the informations he/she is seeking for. This is a simple plugin with options to scroll back to top of your page. When a user clicks the given icon, the scroll will be moved to top so that user doesn’t need to scroll to top manually.

I would say this is a most needed plugin that you must install because as you all know social media plays a vital role in our life. It reflects in our site popularity too, If you are in a part of any social media, you are getting some chances to increase your websites visitors visits. If you have a new post, you can share that to any social media, that is all you are required to do. You followers will love those and visit your site, that makes your site popular. Simple!. Now we need a plugin to do make this easy. Here you can install Super Socializer.

14. SyntaxHighlighter Evolved

You can install this plugin from here.

If you are a developer, or any kind of coder, you may have situations to post some codes to your posts. The SyntaxHighlighter helps you to do that. It formats everything we are placing inside the tags. What we are required to do is, just place the codes inside the tags.

15. UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore

You can install this plugin from here.

We all are humans and we do mistakes. In fact mistakes are making us strong. Once Albert Einstein said “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new”. So practically we need backups to do the mistakes. It is quite easy to take back ups of your WordPress files and database with the help of UpdraftPlus plugin. It helps you to back up the files and database to a safest place, that is cloud (Amazon S3 (or compatible), Dropbox, Google Drive, Rackspace Cloud, DreamObjects, FTP, Openstack Swift, UpdraftPlus Vault and email).

16. WP Super Cache

You can install this plugin from here.

We can simply says “Without caching, your site is just like a computer with 100 MB Ram”. I am not sure what are all we can do with 100 MB Ram, since I have never get a chance ( Not sure it exists too). What matters is, it becomes slow. What if a returning user keeps on waiting to see your site post. Will he/she waits more than a minute? I would say a big NO. All users needs the results quickly. As we know “Time and tide wait for none”. To get rid of this, you must install a cache plugin in your site. Then WP Super Cache would be the nice selection. The features available with this plugins are outstanding. You can check those in the plugin home page.

Background

I was using wamp server to work with wordpress. That is fine, but it will make some conflicts between our IIS and Skype in our machines, since both apache server and IIS and Skype uses same port (port 80) for the operations. If you need some solutions for those issues, you can see here:

First thing you need to do is, installing Web Platform Installer. You can download this from Microsoft Web Platform Installer. Once you downloaded it, please go ahead and install.

Open Microsoft Web Platform Installer. And search for WordPress.

Now Select WordPress and click on Add and then click Install. Now you can see MySQL configuration page as follows. Give the password you need to set for root.

Now click on Continue. Now you will be shown the perquisites to be downloaded. Just click I Accept to download MySQL and WordPress.

Now just wait for the process to be completed. This process will install WebMatrix which we are going to use as the platform to work with WordPress, MySQL, WordPress, IIS 8 which is compatible with WebMatrix.

Note: If you have installed IIS 10 in your machine, the WebMatrix won’t work. To make it work, you may need to uninstall IIS 10 and install IIS 8.

Once you have installed everything. Go to your applications and open WebMatrix.

Once you logged in, you can see a home page as follows.

Click new–> App Gallery–> WordPress –> Click next.

Type your site name and click next. Finally click OK. Now you can see your wordpress is installed and it will asked for initial set ups. If you are new to set up wordpress I suggest you to see here: Set up WordPress in Your Local

One you have done the initial set up, you will be able to login to your wordpress site. And you can see your files in your WebMatrix application.

You can run your wordpress site by clicking the button Run.

You can see your database under database section and also you can see the data and edit.

You can change the port to any number you wish in WebMatrix. For that go to Site tab–> Select your site –> Settings. In the localhost textbox you can edit the port.

I hope you read my articles related to Virtual Machines in azure. If not, please read those. I was being limited to use only 20 MB size since one of the MSDN subscription was providing me ClearDB. So I thought of creating a virtual machine and install MySQL. Then I restored my previous Database to my new Database. Here in this article, I will share you the steps to link the database you created to azure virtual machine and wordpress.

Steps to Back Up your ClearDB and restore

Login to your azure portal https://manage.windowsazure.com

Hope you have already installed MySQL in your Virtual Machine. If so, we are ready to go.

First thing we need to do is to add the end points in our Azure virtual machine. To do so you need to follow the below steps.

Go to your virtual machine in azure management portal.

Now click on the end points as shown in the preceding image.

Click on the add option in the footer area.

Now you will be getting a pop up, in that please click on the Add standalone end points.

In the given area, please select MySQL as name and TCP as protocol. Port should be the one we did it while configuring the MySQL. For example 3306. I suggest you to do not edit in that area.

Click on the tick icon once you have made entry for the required fields. Then you can see the progression and once it is completed, you will get a message as follows.

So we have successfully created the end points for our virtual machine MySQL. The next step is, to change some settings in the firewall in our virtual machine. Please do this with some care. It is very much important.

Go to the start menu and type power shell. You will be given some search results.

Now you can see a command window with the name of logged in user as shown in the preceding image.

The next step is a bit complex one. You need to enter a complex command which is shown here.

For your convenience I am giving the command as below.

And if you do the above step correctly, I am sure you will be given a result as follows.

Wow, we have done the settings needed now.

Now we need to change some settings in our wordpress configuration. As you all know the wordpress configuration is in the file called wp-config.php. So we are going to change the configuration in that file.

Again go to your manage azure page, click the web application you need to change the settings.

Now go to the dashboard and click on edit in visual studio on-line.

You can see your wordpress files now. Click on the wp-config.php.

It is always better to take a back up or copy of the wp-config.php, so that you can revert back to your clearDB configuration whenever you want. I strongly recommend you to do this step.

You can rename the pasted file, just right click on the file and click rename.

As you can see in the below image, I have given the name as ClearDB-Wp-Config.php.

Open your wp-config.php and change the MySQL host name.

Now add the port number in the host name because it listen that port.

Please do not forget to change the database name, user name , password too.

Now I am sure your blog with new MySQL database will be running . Keep blogging. Cheers!.

In this article we will learn how we will add related posts to each posts in wordpress according to the tags given. Even though there are so many plugins available to do the same, here I am going to show you a demo of implementing the same without a plugin. I hope you will like it.

Background

Today I was writing some articles in my website, once I finished my writing, I was just thinking about showing the related posts to each posts according to the tags selected. Hereby I will show you how we can implement it.

Before going through it, we can do this in two way.

I will always recommend you to use normal PHP, WordPress implementation which does not require any plugin. Do you know why?

Limitations if use plugins

These all problems will be resolved if you use normal few lines of PHP codes.

Using the code

Since we need that related posts entry must be seen in each and every posts, we should make some changes in the file called single.php. You can either edit this file or create a widget.

Find out end of each posts, you can inspect one of your page elements in UI and find out the class name and search the same in the single.php file. For me it is class post-excerpt.

Now after that class ends, you need to paste the below lines of codes

Now update your file, and run your website. Click on any post and see the output.

I have selected a post which is related to JQuery, and got the related posts as follows. It works great.

Please be noted that you need to add tags in each posts, then only this mechanism works.

If you are new to Azure please read here. Normally when we host our website in Azure, we need to create a web application where we need to select the application name and, so once you configured everything , your website URL will be something like sibeeshvenu.azurewebsites.net , we can change this and point to our CNAME by some procedure, that we will discuss in our next post. So what will happen is when you go for the above URL, it will just redirect to our CNAME (sibeeshpassion.com) . We will discuss that. Now even if you configure those, you need to set some settings in your wordpress to make our categories and post contains our CNAME in URL.

Steps

Login to your WordPress

Go to settings-> General.

You can change it to your CNAME.

Now if you see those category URL’s you will see it is pointing to your CNAME URL.

Background

Yesterday I downloaded and installed WampServer in my local machine. Unfortunately, when I tried to start WampServer, it was not starting at all. I tried all the feasible solutions. I restarted my machine, I closed and re-opened the machine. I did all the options. But the result was always the same. Finally I discovered the solution to resolve this issue. Basically I am a Software Engineer with hands-off experience in Microsoft technologies, so I installed Visual Studio 2010, 2012 and 2013 in my system. As you all know, to work with Visual Studio we all must install IIS in our system. Am I right? So I installed that too. The software was in my system for a long period of time.
Now I installed WampServer in my system. Any server needs a separate port to listen with. And if any of other is using the same port, it won’t work correctly.

What a selfish character, right? We are all in a world where we share everything (including knowledge, money, food and so on) but the software does not have this character. They are selfish.

So we can’t change their character. Let it be! We will try for an another solution. Here I will share two solutions.

Solution 1: Changing the port

In this solution, we will change the port assigned for WampServer. Let us see how to do that. If you installed WampServer in your machine, you can find an icon in your tool bar. Just click on that icon.

Click on the httpd.conf under the Apache server section. Now you will get a file opened as follows.

From the file, please search for 80Listen and replace 80 with 8080. That’s all. Now if you restart your WampServer, everything will work fine.

Solution 2: Stopping the IIS

If the preceding solution does not work in your case, you can stop IIS in your system. To do so you need to use the preceding procedures.
Go to the command window (you can use Window+R as a shortcut) and type cmd and press Enter.

After pressing Enter, you will get a window as in the following.

Now if you follow the command as shown in the image, your IIS will be stopped.

What you need to do next is, check which one is using port 80. To check, please click on the Apache -> Service -> Test Port 80.

Then it is time to run your local host.

Click on the phpinfo(), so that you can confirm there are no errors.

Background

A Few days ago, my friend Gaurav Arora suggested that I change my static website (www.sibeeshpassion.com) to a dynamic one. Thank you so much for giving me the idea, Gaurav. Therefore, I thought of changing my normal HTML pages to WordPress posts. Since I am completely new to the term PHP and WordPress, I thought to give it a try locally. Hence, I began configuring everything on localhost.

Configuring WordPress

Before we start, please ensure that you have downloaded and installed the Wamp Server and WordPress. You can download them from the following links.

Now, you can follow the preceding procedure. Let us categorize the procedure into the following three points.

Setting Up Database

To configure a database in your Wamp Server, please use the preceding procedure.

Step 1

After installing the Wamp Server, you can find a new icon on your Toolbar. Just click on it and now click localhost.

Step 2

Now, you will get a new window as shown below.

Next, click on phpmyadmin.

Step 3

Now, you will get the phpMyAdmin section as shown in the following screenshot.

Now, click on the database tab and type your database name and click on Create. That’s all we need to do to create a database successfully.

Here is the procedure for creating a user.

Step 1

Start with clicking on the user tab.

Step 2

Fill in the required details.

Once you have filled it in, please click on the Go button. Now, using this, we have created a user for our WordPress.

Configure WordPress

Now we have done all the required settings to configure WordPress. So, let’s start with configuring WordPress.

Type your WordPress folder name that you have pasted in the www root of the Wamp Server.

Your URL looks as follows: http://localhost:80/wordpress/wp-admin

Here, WordPress is my folder where I have the WordPress files. When you follow that link you will get a window as follows.

Now select your language and click on continue.

Step 2

Now we will provide the database and user details. To continue, please click the “Let’s go!” button.

Step 3

Now, the next step is to edit our wp-config file.

Once you edit that file, move to the next step.

Step 4

Now, please fill the form.

Note: You need to use the database and user that we already created in the first step.

Step 5

If you submit the preceding form, you can see a message as follows.

Now click “Run the install”.
